Digital radio: DRMSA and Radio Pulpit lead the way
Written by Anette van Schalkwyk on 12 February 2026
Radio Pulpit is taking part in the launch of an eight-month Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) demonstration trial. The trial will be performed by the DRM Southern Africa (DRMSA) Group.
It will showcase Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) operating in the FM band and evaluate its technical, commercial, and public-interest benefits, within a real South African broadcasting environment.
Radio Pulpit is one of only three radio stations in South Africa, taking part in the trial. On 13 February (World Radio Day), the launch will mark an important step towards future teaching, learning, and public information services, via advanced digital radio functionalities.
Distance education – no internet or data needed
Launched under an ICASA test license from the Northcliff High-Site in Johannesburg, the trial will open the door to future classroom-style learning and distance education, without the need for internet connectivity or data.
DRM specialists will demonstrate how DRM digital broadcasts can deliver e-learning content through audio, text and images. Content can be received live and stored locally for on-demand use, ensuring learning continuity, even where connectivity is intermittent or unavailable.
Low-power DRM receivers convert the signal into a local Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing tablets, laptops or phones to access lessons without relying on internet connectivity. AI technologies, such as high-quality-text-to-speech- audio will also be available to support the creation, translation and tailoring of learning content.
Early Warning System
In case of local or national emergencies, listeners with DRM radio receivers will in future be able to receive warnings via an Early Warning System (EWS).
Multiple radio services broadcast simultaneously
Using a single FM frequency, the DRM platform allows multiple radio services to be broadcast simultaneously. Broadcasters will be able to use digital tools to enhance delivery, while keeping trusted human storytelling at the heart of radio.
Findings from the trial will help inform future digital radio planning in South Africa.
