The Command Jesus Gave That Most Believers Quietly Avoid

Written by on 27 March 2026

Not Many Laws—One Living Call

As New Testament believers, it’s easy to wonder: What does God truly require of me now? We’re no longer under the Old Covenant law as Israel was. Instead, we live under something both simpler—and deeper.

Scripture points us to a single, powerful command: love.

Not a vague feeling. Not a passive idea. But a life shaped by the love of Christ.

What Jesus Made Clear

When Jesus Christ was asked about the greatest commandment, His answer cut through centuries of law and tradition:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind…
And love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37–39)

Then He added something profound:

“All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

In other words, everything God ever required finds its fulfilment in love.

A New Commandment, A Higher Standard

Before the cross, Jesus gave His followers a defining instruction:

“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)

This isn’t just “love others as yourself.” It’s love as Christ loves—sacrificially, patiently, relentlessly.

This is the mark of a true disciple.

Echoed by the Early Church

The apostles didn’t complicate this message—they reinforced it.

  • Paul the Apostle wrote: “The entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:14)
  • James the Just called it: “The royal law” (James 2:8)
  • John the Apostle declared: “Whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” (1 John 4:7–8)

Different voices, one message: love is the fulfilment of God’s will.

What About the Ten Commandments?

They are not discarded—they are fulfilled.

When love takes root in your heart:

  • You honour God above all else
  • You speak the truth
  • You protect life
  • You remain faithful
  • You live with integrity

Love doesn’t ignore righteousness—it produces it from within.

Led by the Spirit, Not the Letter

The New Covenant shifts the focus. It’s no longer about external compliance, but internal transformation.

“Walk by the Spirit…” (Galatians 5:16)

The Holy Spirit shapes your heart so that love becomes natural, not forced.

In One Sentence

Follow Christ, walk in the Spirit, and love God and people—that is the commandment for every New Testament believer.
