Women of the New Testament: Brave, Strong, and Called

Written by on 30 May 2025

The New Testament shows us that women were never just in the background. They followed Jesus, shared the good news, and helped build the early church. They were leaders, teachers, and brave believers. Their stories remind us that women have always had an important place in God’s plan.

Mary Magdalene was the first to see Jesus alive after He rose from the dead (John 20:14–18). Jesus told her to go and tell the others. She was the first to share the good news. That’s why she’s often called the “apostle to the apostles.” Her story shows us that women can carry big, important messages from God.

Priscilla worked alongside her husband Aquila. She helped teach a man named Apollos more about Jesus (Acts 18:18–28). She knew the Scriptures well and taught with kindness and truth. Her story shows that women can be wise teachers and strong leaders.

Phoebe is called a deacon in Romans 16:1–2. She likely carried Paul’s letter to the Roman church, which was a big job. Paul trusted her. He spoke of her as a helper to many. Her story shows that women can be trusted with great responsibility and leadership.

Junia is praised in Romans 16:7 as “outstanding among the apostles.” For a long time, people tried to say Junia was a man, but now we know she was a woman—and an apostle. Her story tells us that women helped lead the church from the very beginning.

Lydia sold purple cloth and welcomed Paul and his friends into her home (Acts 16:14–15). She was the first person in Europe to follow Jesus. Her home became a church. Her story shows that even in everyday life, women can do great things for God.

We also read about Philip’s four daughters, who spoke messages from God (Acts 21:9). And old writings from early Christians tell us about women who were deacons, leaders, and even gave their lives for Jesus.

These women were brave. They were strong. They listened to God and followed Him with their whole hearts.

What has God placed in your heart? What gifts has He given you?

A Message for You

You may live in a very different time than these women, but God’s call hasn’t changed. He still calls women to lead, teach, serve, and speak with love and truth. Whether you’re at work, at home, or with friends, your voice matters.

What has God placed in your heart? What gifts has He given you?

Don’t hide them. Use them. You are part of something bigger. You are needed. You are called.

The church grows stronger when everyone—men and women—step into their place with love, faith, and courage.
