Celebrating Youth, Empowered by Faith
Written by Brahm van Wyk on 14 June 2025
On this Youth Day, let’s remember that the Bible doesn’t sideline the young—it elevates them. God has always used young people to speak truth, show courage, and lead change. Whether you’re 15 or 25, your faith matters now. The same God who worked through David and Mary is still calling young hearts today.
When we think of the heroes of the Bible, we often picture wise old prophets, seasoned leaders, or strong kings. But some of the Bible’s boldest and most influential figures were young people—teenagers and young adults who, despite their age, stepped up in faith and shaped history. On this Youth Day, we celebrate those who prove that you’re never too young to make a difference when God is with you.
You’re never too young to be used by God—faith, not age, is what makes a hero
David – The Teen Giant-Slayer
David was just a teenager—estimated to be between 13 and 15 years old—when he faced Goliath (1 Samuel 17). While seasoned soldiers cowered, David stepped forward with a slingshot and unshakable faith. He wasn’t driven by arrogance, but by a confidence in God’s power. His courage teaches us that faith, not age or experience, is what truly equips us to face giants.
Mary – The Young Mother of Jesus
Most scholars believe Mary was between 14 and 16 years old when the angel Gabriel told her she would carry the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). Despite the overwhelming nature of this call, Mary responded with humility and trust. She didn’t have all the answers, but she had obedience and a heart ready to serve. Her story reminds us that God often chooses the unlikely for His greatest purposes.
Jeremiah – The Teen Prophet
Jeremiah tried to use his youth as an excuse. “I am too young,” he told God (Jeremiah 1:6). But God replied, “Do not say, ‘I am too young’… I am with you.” Scholars believe Jeremiah was about 17 when he was called to be a prophet. He went on to be a voice of truth in a rebellious nation, proving that age doesn’t limit purpose when God calls.
Josiah – The Boy King
Josiah became king of Judah at just 8 years old (2 Kings 22:1). By the time he was 16, he began seeking the God of his ancestor David. At 20, he led a radical reform, tearing down idols and restoring true worship in the nation. Josiah’s story is proof that even the youngest leaders can spark revival when their hearts are fully turned to God.
Timothy – Paul’s Young Protégé
Timothy joined Paul’s missionary journeys in his late teens or early twenties. Paul encouraged him not to let anyone “despise your youth” (1 Timothy 4:12) and urged him to lead by example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Timothy eventually became a trusted pastor and leader in the early church.
So, to every young believer, your age isn’t a barrier—it’s a launchpad.
