Christians and decision-making
Written by Han on 8 October 2024
Christians face decisions daily, whether big or small, momentous or seemingly trivial. How, then, should Christians make decisions that honor God? The Bible offers several guiding principles that can help believers navigate the complexities of decision-making with wisdom and confidence, trusting in God’s guidance.
1. Seek God’s Will
The foundation of all decision-making for a Christian is a desire to seek God’s will. Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
By aligning our thoughts with God’s truth, we can discern His guidance more clearly.
2. Pray for Wisdom
James 1:5 encourages believers to ask God for wisdom, saying, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Prayer is key to inviting God into our decision-making process, trusting He will provide clarity.
3. Rely on Scripture
God’s Word is a powerful tool for guiding our choices. Psalm 119:105 states,
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Scripture provides timeless principles that help us distinguish between right and wrong.
4. Seek Counsel
Proverbs 15:22 teaches the value of seeking advice: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.” Wise counsel from godly friends or mentors helps confirm our decisions.
Christians should make decisions prayerfully, seeking God’s will, wisdom, and guidance through His Word and wise counsel. By doing so, we can trust that our decisions will honor God and reflect His purposes.
