Does it count as tithing if I don’t give directly to the church I’m attending?

Is tithing a principle exclusively for the church, or can I tithe to organisations and causes? What does the Word say about this important subject?

Needs abound in the body of Christ and the world over and because of that people and organisations are constantly asking for assistance and support through financial contributions and tithing. The burning question for the giving believer is to know whether you are giving to the right organisation and whether your giving counts as a tithe or offering.

The difference between tithing and offerings

Yes, there is a difference. Tithing is an Old Testament concept that was introduced to Israel as a learning experience on how to give. Tithes are a standard requirement to assist with the upkeep of the temple (the Church facility) and the religious work of those leading (the Church). Offerings are an addition to your tithes – it is something you may want to do but is not a standard requirement.

Jesus has given us guidelines on how to give and it does matter to Him that our heart is in the right condition for that giving. In the Word, He says;

Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.

Luke 6:38

Furthermore, we read ‘Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.‘ – 2 Corinthians 9:6,8

Finally, ‘You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”’ – 2 Corinthians 9:7

God has not left us clueless. Scripture abounds with instruction on practical God-pleasing ways in which we can give of our tithes and offerings. The point of discovery in today’s show is whether these are restricted within the confines of our church or not.
