When does my calling start?
Written by Han on 15 January 2023
How do you know if you are ready for service in the Kingdom and that it is time for your calling to begin? How do you know now it’s my turn? That moment of this is it. 1 Cor 7:17 says, “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.”
What is my calling?
I suspect that sometimes we have a picture in our head of how we think our calling will happen and what it will look like. But we forget that our daily actions already give voice to service in the Kingdom, give voice to our calling.
That smile to someone you didn’t even know was going through a tough day. A friendly word or hug. Or just an ear for your husband or wife’s story about what happened at work today – yes, it might be a boring story, but the fact that you are listening and hearing, and ‘ooh and aah’, it makes all the difference. Kingdom work includes showing charity, caring, and being Jesus to someone today.
Calling begins with being re-born, and it starts today. The secret is not that one day when things will happen, but the everyday things – it’s the now and here. Therefore, we should be busy with Kingdom things every day. This way, we become the person God (1) called us to be and (2) made us to be.
We never stop growing and learning. When one lesson is learned, we move on to the next one. That’s how it is. And so we practice our calling every day – even if we don’t realise it. A child does not dwell on one grade he passed; he moves on to the next. It is the same with our calling, too – we keep moving.
Our Father refreshes us on the journey with some pleasant inns but will not encourage us to mistake them for home.
C. S. Lewis
Enjoy life. Enjoy the growth. Keep moving because that way, you live out your calling daily, and you don’t have to wait for one day. Life is not a final destination but a journey.
